A couple of weeks ago, we tried a new Mexican restaurant that opened less than 10 minutes from our house, Don Juan Mexican Bar & Grill. They don’t have their own website, but the menu is identical to their location near Briarwood Mall. They brought chips and salsa to the table and I ordered a house margarita. I thought the margarita was good, not Xochimilco’s good, but good. The chips were really light, crunchy and not greasy at all and I thought the salsa had nice flavor and excellent texture.
They have a huge menu, so it took us a while to decided, but both of us settled on a combo. Dave ordered Combo #16: one enchilada, one burrito, and one tamale and I ordered Combo #24: one chalupa, one burrito, and one chile relleno. The portions are huge! Dave liked his combo. He thought the sauces were flavorful and he really enjoyed the tamale despite the chili on top (he’s had a few tamales with chili in the past that he didn’t enjoy all that much).
I need to stop ordering chalupas because apparently they are nothing like you get at Taco Bell and I’ve made this mistake before. A chalupa is basically a tostada but with beans instead of meat. Who knew? It was still good though. My favorite was the chile relleno, it was very flavorful and nice and tender without being mushy and it wasn’t greasy at all.
While we have several Mexican and Latin American restaurants nearby (Chela’s and Pilar’s their menus are somewhat specialized and ultimately limited. It’s nice to have a traditional (in the American-sense) Mexican restaurant nearby with margaritas and lots of selection.
