We tried another Rick Bayless restaurant before leaving Chicago, this time is was his street food restaurant, XOCO. How it works is that you place an order at the counter and then the hostess sits you at a numbered table. When your food is ready, they bring it out to you. While they do offer some cocktails, we passed. I ordered the housemade limeade and Dave ordered the flavored water of the day. Both were excellent! The limeade was intensely lime-flavored and it reminded me of a virgin margarita. The flavored was was also excellent with strong cucumber and herbal flavors.
To eat, both of us ordered tortas which are kind of like Mexican paninis. Dave had the Cubana made with smoked pork loin and bacon, black beans, avocado, Jack cheese, chipotle mustard, Morita chiles, and homemade cilantro crema. I had the Milanesa which was a crispy chicken breast, black beans, Jack cheese, pickled jalapenos and red onions, Napa cabbage, tomatillo-avocado salsa, and homemade cilantro crema. Both sandwiches were really good. The chicken on my sandwich was a little chewy, but otherwise I really liked all the flavors. The Cuban was very good too. Both were served with salsas for dipping.
We passed on dessert as we had other plans, but I heard their churros are excellent!
For dessert, we picked up a few cupcakes at Crumbs. The cupcakes at Crubms are humongous! We bought four, each eating one on the train ride home and we split the other two over the next two days. I tried the Coffee Toffee and Pumpkin cupcakes and Dave tried the Milkshake and Brownie cupcakes.
Overall, they were just OK. They were somewhat moist, but not very flavorful. The pumpkin cupcake tasted like pumpkin spices, but nothing like pumpkin. The coffee toffee cupcake had a lot of toffee flavor, but no coffee flavor. It was also incredibly sweet, too sweet in my opinion. The brownie cupcake was one note. I actually liked the milkshake cupcake the best (Marble cake filled with vanilla cream cheese frosting mixed with chocolate sandwich cookie crumbs, topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting swirled with chocolate cream cheese frosting and edged with chocolate crunchies.), but maybe that was because we ate it in the height of post-vacation blues?
I think Just Baked cupcakes blow Crumbs cupcakes out of the water. Crumbs cupcakes might be a lot bigger, but Just Baked cupcakes are a lot more moist and have way more flavor.
