Dave and I wanted to try a new restaurant for brunch recently and we gave The Songbird Cafe a go! The Songbird Cafe is located on Plymouth Road and Nixon Road. Upon entering, you’re greeted with a huge chalkboard detailing the menu including specials. You place your order and pay at the counter and are given a number, your food is brought to your table.
I tried a special, the Kogi breakfast tacos made with Asian style BBQ beef, grilled veggies (I only had to pick out three mushrooms!), avocado, and over-easy egg and smoky chipotle salsa (served on the side). Ordering this is very unusual for me, usually I’m not much of a beef eater other than ground beef in burgers and tacos. But I thought I’d be adventurous and with the recent success of trying Korean beef buns at San Street (which I actually did NOT blog about, shocking!), I thought I’d given them a try. I’m glad I did because they were delicious! The whole meal was very well balanced. The meat was super tender and flavorful, the veggies still crisp, cool avocado, runny egg, and a bit of spice from the salsa. I enjoyed a Nutella latte along with it. The meal was very filling, in fact, even though it was technically brunch, it took the place of my lunch and dinner, it was that filling. Boy, look at all those commas…
Dave ordered pancakes, he loves pancakes and I consider him an expert. He said the blueberry pancakes at The Songbird Cafe were excellent and I agree. They were nice and fluffy, had a lot of blueberries inside, and were served piping hot. He tried a caramel latte which was a lot less sweet than what he’s used to, but it did have nice caramel flavor (Cafe Marie wins for best caramel latte, it’s actually a macchiato, if you’re wondering). Dave’s meal also left him very full.
The menu was large and there were several things that I was interested in ordering. The atmosphere was nice too. My meal came out about five minutes after Dave’s which was a bit awkward and it could have been hotter, but these two things were minor infractions compared to the rest of our meal. I look forward to trying The Songbird Cafe again, I’d be tempted to order the Kogi tacos again, but I’ll be sure to try something new!
