Within a five minute drive from our new house we have three Latin/Central American restaurants as if our new location could get any better! We recently had dinner at Chela’s Restaurant and Taqueria. Their menu is short (tacos, tortas, quesadillas, tamales, and burritos) but they offer ten different filling choices so there are so many possibilities to try. Based on the cashiers recommendation, we each got three tacos without rice and beans so we could try a several of the different fillings. The tacos are traditional style with two small corn tortillas with the filling topped with onion, cilantro, and lime wedges.
Dave ordered barbacoa (beef), chipotle chicken, and vegetarian with cheese. His favorite by far was the vegetarian which was full of different types of squash in a tomato-y sauce. It was very good. He liked the other two tacos a lot too, but the vegetarian was definitely his favorite.
I ordered the chipotle chicken as well as potatoes with chili poblano and chorizo. I love all three of my tacos, but I think my favorite was the potato. I had never had a potato taco before and I was expecting diced potato kind of like hash browns, but what I got looked like mashed potatoes that had been browned on the flat top grill. Fabulous! The chorizo was very flavorful and not greasy at all and the chicken was very moist. We both had horchata to drink.
I’m already looking forward to our next meal at Chela’s, I’d really like to try one of their tortas and bonus, they’re close enough for takeout!
