The fifth of November
The gunpowder treason and plot.
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.”
Every year on the fifth of November, Dave and I watch V for Vendetta. It’s one of our favorite movies and watching it on the fifth has become a fun tradition. For years we’ve been talking about doing a theme meal along with the movie by making eggy in a basket. In the movie, V makes an eggy in a basket, basically an egg fried in the center of a piece of bread, for Evey.
We made our eggy in a baskets on our electric grill. First we used a small glass to cut out a circle of each slice of bread. Then we buttered the grill (which had been pre-heated to 350°) and placed the slices of bread and the circles we cut out onto the grill. Then immediately we crack one egg into each hole. Once the egg turns white on the bottom, flip carefully. They only need a couple of minutes on each side if you like your yolks runny. It’s also a good idea to sprinkle each side with salt and pepper while the egg is still liquidy.
We served our eggy in a basket with a Cherry Vodka Sour that Dave renamed a “Scarlett Carson.” If you’ve seen the movie, you know what he’s talking about. While we both have enjoyed whiskey sours in the past, this vodka sour was very tasty too.
