Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive
by Rebecca on August 7, 2012
This past weekend, Dave and I headed Up North with my parents, sister, brother-in-law, and nephew for a nice relaxing weekend. We did a day at the beach and a day in the Traverse City area. Our first stop on that day was a beautiful tour of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes via the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive ia a 7.4 mile self-guided driving tour with great views of the Glen Lakes, the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Lake Michigan.
From the National Park Service website: “The road was built in the 1960s and finished in 1967 by Pierce Stocking. A lumberman with road-building experience, he wanted to share the beauty of the area with others. He operated the facility until his death in 1976; afterwards it was purchased by the National Park Service and added to the park.”
We stopped at the Glen Lakes and the Lake Michigan overlooks. Wow, what a view! In 2011, Good Morning America named the Sleeping Bear Dunes, as the “Most Beautiful Place in America” so don’t expect to be the only people there. It was a bit crowded, but not too bad. I would highly recommend you take the time to drive the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive when you’re in the area, it’s a great way of seeing the highlights of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore.
