Bates’ Hamburgers

by Rebecca on April 6, 2012

Bates' Burgers

Last weekend for my brother-in-law’s birthday, he wanted to try Bates’ Burgers. Bates’ Burgers is a Livonia institution and they’ve been open since 1959.  Between the six of us (our nephew will need a few more teeth before he can partake) we ordered 16 cheeseburgers, 6 small shakes, and 4 orders of fries of various sizes and one with chili. If you’re placing a pick-up order, I would recommend calling ahead, especially if it’s for a large order. They were a bit shorthanded on staff, but our order took about an hour and a half from the time we called it in until the time we were given the goods.

Bates’ Burgers are larger than the typical slider and come standard with onions, ketchup, mustard, and pickles. You can order them with or without cheese. Unlike a lot of sliders, Bates’ Burgers are not steamed, but grilled on the flattop along side the onions. The fries are of the large crinkle cut variety and the shakes are super thick and are only available in chocolate. Seriously, they’re more like a Frosty than a milkshake.

In addition to carryout, they also have a small eat-in area with bar stools at the counter and in the windows. In addition to burgers, fries, and shakes, they also offer hot dogs and coney dogs as well as a traditional “greasy spoon” selection of breakfast items.

If you’ve never had a Bates’ Burger, I suggest you stop by, heck I suggest you stop by even if you’ve had one as I’m sure it’s been a while.
