Ever since I was a little girl, I remember buying pastries at Ackroyd’s Scottish Bakery in Redford. Mom would bring home the white box tied with string filled with fern cakes, empire biscuits, raisin bars, butter tarts, and walnut tarts. Though, I have to say, our most recent purchase of empire biscuits were a little disappointing. They were dry and they were really skimpy on the jelly filling, which was all dried out. The butter tarts that we bought were very good. We also bought two sausage rolls for a quick dinner that night. I warmed them in the toaster oven and I had baked beans poured over them, Dave had them on the side. I am so my father’s daughter.
Ackroyd’s also offers many different varieties of savory pies including, meat (ground beef), steak, and chicken, as well as sausage rolls and pasties. They usually have several varieties of scones as well as Scottish white and Irish soda bread. They also carry a lot of products from Scotland and the rest of the UK that you don’t typically find in American grocery stores like roast chicken flavor potato chips (crisps) and Irn_Bru pop. They also have a great selection of candy including, Smarties, Cadbury Flake Bars, and others.
Recently I stopped in to buy some Easter candy for the niblings. I follow Ackroyd’s on Facebook and saw they had really cute chocolates and other candies from the UK. I was not disappointed! I had to restrain myself from buying it all! I got a chocolate chicken and a chocolate chick that’s filled with Smarties, a Milkybar cow, and a mint Aero chocolate sheep (it has air bubbles in it). I also bought a couple of bags of chocolate eggs (Cadbury and Smarties) for Dave and I. I definitely want to go back sometime soon and browse a bit more, I don’t doubt that I’ll find something that will tempt me!
