After hearing about Love’s Custard Pies on a recent episode of the Travel Channel’s Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, I knew we had to check them out the next time we were at the Eastern Market.

Love’s specializes in Southern-style custard pies, including: sweet potato, chess (also known as vinegar pie), red velvet, and bean. Yes, I said bean! We tried both the navy bean pie and the black bean pie, both were delicious, but we went with the navy bean pie. The filling was rich and creamy, very smooth and with the just right amount of sweetness. It had the constancy of pumpkin pie for those that are having issues picturing a sweet pie made out of navy beans. I’m really looking forward to trying the rest of their flavors one day.
