Mae’s is a charming little diner located in Pleasant Ridge (near Royal Oak and Ferndale) and it’s been on our Eating Out Wishlist for a while now. I am so glad that we were able to have brunch there this past weekend. I was in Royal Oak for a sewing class, so Dave hung out at a coffee shop while I was at Haberman Fabrics. Afterwards, we headed over to Mae’s for brunch. It’s a rather small restaurant with about 10 tables and a good-sized lunch counter. I loved the turquoise vinyl seats and bar stools.
I had looked over the menu ahead of time, so I was prepared, which was good because there are so many possibilities! I ended up ordering aebleskivers or Danish pancakes. They were crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. So good! My mouth is watering just thinking about them… They’re served with your choice of strawberries or raspberries in syrup and whipped cream. I got the strawberries. It also comes with your choice of meat, so I got bacon. The bacon was very thick cut and was nicely cooked, it had great flavor. I also ordered a side of potato latkes and they were terrific as well.
Dave ordered coffeecake pancakes (which was on my short list of options) and they were OK. They were good, but the coffeecake topping kind of dried the pancakes out even though they were a bit overdone. Not horrible, but not something we’d order again. He got a side of hash browns, they were good, but nothing special.
Both Dave and I agreed that we’d be happy to try Mae’s again, I’m even thinking about trying them next weekend since I’ll be back for my second sewing class, but we’ll see. I think both of us would like to try one of their several eggs bennies or even the deep-fried Oreos!
