Interview with Pam Turkin, Just Baked
by Rebecca on October 19, 2010
This is the third in a series of interviews with Michigan women business owners. If you have any additional questions for our entrepreneur, please leave them in the comments and I’ll follow-up and post her response.
1. Tell us about your business.
Just Baked is a specialty bakery in Metro Detroit. Our product focus is on gourmet cupcakes in creative flavors. We currently bake out of our kitchen in Livonia and operate four, soon to be five, retail locations. We also have a custom order department that specializes in custom cakes for all occasions. We will also be branching out into the retail market this month. Just Baked has made an alliance with Faygo (warning, their website plays loud music!), a local soda brand to make, Faygo-flavored cupcakes!
2. How did you first become an entrepreneur?
I have always had a entrepreneurial spirit. I remember as a kid selling studded gloves to my friends. I love to create and build the business. It is so fun to go from an idea to reality. I love the journey.
3. Where do you see yourself and your business in five years?
I see this business growing through licensing our business. We will be opening our first joint store this month. Licensing the stores will allow us to control the product and expand into other areas. I am also hopeful that Just Baked will grow into new markets throughout the US.
4. Any tips for aspiring small business owners?
DO YOUR HOMEWORK. I believe that everyone considering running their own business should be prepared for the work it involves. I believe often people get so involved with opening that we tend not to think about what will happen when it becomes a success. Know your competition. Know your market. Know what kind of capital you will really need to run the business. Believe in yourself!
5. What is your favorite Michigan business/product?
Well after Just Baked cupcakes I would have to say I have two: Better Made BBQ chips and Faygo Redpop to wash it down!
