This past weekend, we went blueberry picking at The Blueberry Patch in Grass Lake. In around 2.5 hours, my husband, my mother-in-law and I picked 27 pounds of blueberries! We’re planning on freezing most of them, canning some as jam, and we left a bowl out to enjoy fresh this week.
The Blueberry Patch has over 3 acres with approximately 1000 well-aged blueberry bushes. They are never sprayed and only organic fertilizer is used. Most of the bushes have a net above them to protect the berries from the birds. The blueberries are a bit smaller than you find at the store, but much, much sweeter. Just as long as you remember to pick the blue blueberries rather than the red or white ones!
There were several families (many with small children) picking along side us and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The couple that runs The Patch were very nice. One tip: make sure you wear a belt so you can attach your bucket to your waist, it helps a lot! Also, remember to bring sunscreen, a hat, and a can of bug spray (just in case).
The farm is open 7 days a week 9:00 am to 7:00 pm. Give them a call (517-795-8784) before you head out to confirm conditions. Blueberries are $3.50 a pound which sounds a bit pricey, but you pay more for local, organic berries and the u-pick experience.
